"The Bet"

the Banker: A wealthy young banker who bets a lawyer two millions (rubles, probably) that he wouldn't last fifteen years, imprisoned, and that capital punishment was better. By the end of the fifteen years, however, the banker is nearly bankrupt. He plans to kill the lawyer so he won't have made it fifteen years, but things work out differently than planned...

the Lawyer: A young lawyer who bets two millions that he can last fifteen years imprisoned. He spent those years reading until he was so far enlightened, money meant nothing to him. He was disgusted with money and material things. He ended up leaving just before the time was up, so the banker did not have to pay him.
