Things Fall Apart

Chinua Achebe

Besides writing Things Fall Apart, Albert Chinualumogo Achebe is a poet and novelist. He was raised in Ogidi, a village in Igboland, Nigeria. He grew up speaking English, but was bombarded by Igbo traditions as well as what the white people brought them. He studied literature and medicine at the University of Ibadan, and then he went to work for the Nigerian Broadcasting Company. Starting in the 1950s with 1958's Things Fall Apart, he became one of the people in a Nigerian literary movement. He wrote other books No Longer At Ease, Arrow of God, and A Man of the People. Now, he is married and has four children, here in the United States, and he teaches at Bard College.
